Schlitterbahn Vacation Village is a resort complex that opened in summer 2009 in Kansas City, Kansas. It was announced in September 2005 by Schlitterbahn Waterparks. The 370-acre (1.5 km2), $750 million development will include a nearly 40-acre (160,000 m2) waterpark, which will be Schlitterbahn's fourth waterpark and its first outside of the state of Texas. (In comparison, Oceans of Fun in Kansas City, Missouri occupies 60 acres.) The project will also include 1,500 guest rooms (including a hotel, cabins and a "Treehaus Resort"), 750,000 square feet (70,000 m2) of retail space, a ¾ mile covered river walk, and the "Transportainment River System," which transports visitors around the resort via a manmade river.[1]
Groundbreaking took place September 18, 2007 on the land currently occupied by the Wyandotte County Fairgrounds and the Unified Government courthouse annex, across Interstate 435 from the Kansas Speedway and Village West. Due in part to the current economic situation, the project was scaled back into phases. Phase 1, a part of the outdoor water park, opened for a "sneak peek" on Wednesday, July 15, 2009. Phase 2 is scheduled to open in 2011. Other phases of the project are scheduled to open in successive years.
Phase 1 included a dozen water attractions, 3 restaurants and 2 shops that were part of phase 1. For the 2011 season, phase 2 will open on April 30, 2011 with 6 new attractions: Boogie Bahn, a rapids river, Blitz Falls tube chute, and 3 new waterslides called Loopy Luge, Der Bahn and Comal Express. Also included in phase 2 are new cabanas, a rapids beach, 1 new shop and a new restaurant.
